The SPiN Writing Group is a dynamic trio of Vancouver novelists–June Hutton, Jen Sookfong Lee, and Mary Novik–who met in a writing workshop in 2002 and took a vow to stick together until their novels, then in their infancy, were published.
For five years, we supported and encouraged one another while we wrote our debut novels, found agents, and attracted publishers. All three of those first novels have since been published: Jen’s The End of East (Knopf), Mary’s Conceit (Doubleday), and June’s Underground (Cormorant). As Quill & Quire said, “If sports analogies have a place in the literary world, this month’s publication of June Hutton’s debut novel, Underground, represents a hat trick of sorts. Hutton is the third member of an informal Vancouver writing group to release a novel over the past two years–and since the group has only three members, it’s now batting a thousand.”
Now, fifteen years after we first met, Mary’s second novel has been published as Muse in English and French, and as L’amante del Papa (The Pope’s Lover) in Italy. June has published her second novel Two-Gun & Sun, a tour-de-force that combines opera and gun-slinging in the wilds of small-town British Columbia. Both Mary and June are working on new novels.
Jen has published three more books: Shelter, a novella for young adults, The Better Mother, her sophomore novel, and The Conjoined, which has been shortlisted for the prestigious Ethel Wilson Fiction Award in the BC Book Prizes. She has several fiction and nonfiction projects in the works.
